Pay yourself first
Is the unlock for daily writing as simple as writing first thing in the morning?
For the longest time, I’ve wondered how to unlock the secret to daily writing. My conclusion: “pay yourself first.”
I’m not the first to say it, and I won’t be the last, but pay yourself first could mean different things to different people. In my case, paying myself first means writing first thing in the morning before I begin client work, usually for just 10-15 minutes some time between 7:40 and 8:00 a.m. Then I can embark on the rest of the day without needing to hold anything back.
When I wait, when I write at the end of the day, it’s a struggle. All I want is bath, book, and bed, especially in winter. I know the end of the day resistance well. That’s what I’m doing right now. It’s hard.
But when I write in the morning, I spend the rest of the day feeling accomplished no matter what happens. And so I ask, “Is daily writing as simple as writing first thing in the morning, every morning?”
I’m looking forward to finding out.
This is an interesting idea.
I'd heard of 'pay yourself first' in the context of money, but never made the bridge to writing. I'll take a shot at implementing this too!
